Whenchildrenatanearlyageexperiencedisappointmentincommunicatingoverandoveragainitsignificantlyaffectstheirconfidence.Welearnthroughpatternsandrepetition.Whenachildcanteffectivelyengageineither,itbecomesfrustratingforthechildandtheparent.Theconsequencesusuallyendinthechildavoidingsocialinteraction,throwingtantrums,andlosingself-confidence.ByusingbabysignlanguageIwasabletobypasssomemajordevelopmentalissuesthatmysonwashaving.
Ben,mythirdchild,hasbeenmymostshyandslowesttowanttoverbalize.Healwayshadahardtimepronouncingthings.HestruggledtogethismouthtoproducetheRsound,andhefrequentlyomittedtheS,Th,andChsoundsinmanywords.Thepoorlittleguywasgettingsofrustratedwhenpeoplecouldntunderstandhim.Hewouldeitheravoidtalkingandinteractingorhedstartscreamingandthrowingatantrum.Iveworkedwithmanyparentswhohavedealtwithsimilarproblems.Theytendtofeeloverwhelmedandconfusedbecausetheydontknowhowtohelptheirchild.
WithBenIdecidedthatanytimeIfoundoutwhathewastryingtosayIwouldteachhimthesignlanguageforthatword.Itwaslikeamiracle!HeknewthatIcouldunderstandhimifheusedthesign,andthenIwasabletohelphimlearnhowtopronouncethewordshewasverballystrugglingtosay.

Forinstance,BenwouldsayGaformultiplethings.Hedsaygaforwater,ga,gafordog,andgaaaforbook(Ihavenoideawhy).Idpickeduponwateranddog,becausehewasalreadyusingthosesigns,thankgoodness.ThenonedayhewastryingtotellmehewantedsomethingandIhadnoideawhathewastalkingabout.Wewanderedaroundthehousetryingtofigureoutwhatheneeded.Finallyhesawthebookhewanted,gaaa,gaaa,gaaa.Ineverwouldhaveguessed.RightthenIsignedbooktohim,thenItookhishandsandhadhimsignbook.WediditafewtimesuntilIcouldtellheunderstood.LaterthatnightwhenIwasputtinghimtobedhesaidga.Iaskedifhewantedsomewater,hesaidnoandstartedsigningbook.Igrabbedabookandhestartedjumpingupanddownyelling,yeah!Whatareliefandpuresenseofjoyandaccomplishmentwebothfelt.Thatwastentimeseasierthanwanderingaroundthehousetryingtofigureoutwhatheneeded.
Benhascontinuedtobuildconfidence,avoidtantrums,andexcelsocially.Itrulyfeelthatbabysignlanguagehasenabledhimtoprogresswhenheotherwisewouldhavefallenbehindandconsequentlylostconfidence.Parentsdonttypicallythinktousebabysignlanguageforbuildingconfidenceintheirchildren,butIhaveseenitworkfirsthandtimeandtimeagain.Enablingyourchildtobettercommunicatewillhaveapositiveimpactonthemfortherestoftheirlives.
